MG TF Steptronic with a malfunction
The MG TF Steptronic is equipped with a CVT automatic gearbox.
A damper plate is used as a coupling between the engine and the gearbox.
This plate is very similar to a clutch disc of a normal clutch. The disc is screwed to the flywheel and the CVT input shaft fits in the center.
It functions as a damper for smoother shift points. The damping is done with springs, just like in a clutch disc. These feathers become limp and can then rattle in the plate.
This is very clearly audible outside the car. It sounds like something is rattling at the exhaust.
The repair is quite drastic. We build the complete engine with gearbox and subframe from the car.
Then the CVT is disconnected from the engine.
The damper plate is then easy to remove and can be overhauled.
This repair costs approximately € 1,800.
Because the engine is completely out, other work is now also easy to do. Such as replacing the timing belt and the water pump.
